School Picnic in Fall Scented Candle
Autumn in Hong Kong has a smell that is hard to place. Some days it reads as faintly smoked wood, some days as cinnamon and apple. The explanation we find most convincing is that it is fallen leaves breaking down in the soil, carried out into the streets by the autumn wind.
What we remember most, though, is the school picnic — the one trip every year between autumn and winter. We lost count of how many of ours went to Tai Lam Country Park, which is also where people go in December and January to look at the red leaves.
So this is that park, from memory: freshly fallen leaves, with pine and cedar leaf for a cool woodiness — something like breathing out into an autumn wind — and a little smoke underneath for dryness.
