Tuen Mun Ferry Pier Scented Candle
We had wanted a series built on our own neighbourhoods for a long time and could not decide where to start. Tsun Yip Lane in Kwun Tong was considered. So was a certain shopping centre that smells overwhelmingly of milk, and Tai Mo Shan. We settled on Tuen Mun Ferry Pier.
You may reasonably ask where that is — almost nobody knows it. We did not pick Central Pier or Tsim Sha Tsui because this is where the owner spent their childhood, and for the first one in the series that was the only qualification that counted. It is a quiet place: no tourist noise, just dogs and residents walking the waterfront. Its main flaw is the traffic getting to Kowloon.
The scent is only loosely marine. We took out most of the fruit and flowers that usually make an ocean candle cheerful and left sea salt, brine and damp air behind. It is deliberately faint — closer to standing at the pier in the wind than to a bottled seaside.
Candles in this series do not come with a playlist. They come with coordinates, printed on the tin: type them into Google or Apple Maps and you will arrive at the real place. If you have seen the film Beyond the Dream, you have already seen a fair amount of it.
